In September of 2020, Lance was clinically diagnosed with Transfusional Hemosiderosis which is the accumulation of iron in the liver and heart but also endocrine organs, in patients who receive or did receive frequent blood transfusions. Initially messaged to us via his oncology team as “nothing we haven’t seen before”, a nagging feeling left us wondering if there was more “there” there. Turns out there was.
Lance was found to have roughly 20 times the amount of iron a healthy 20-year old male should have stored in his liver. Only after an MRI was advocated for was this discovered. If an MRI had not been advocated for, Lance would be walking around with a diseased liver that would only get more diseased. Lance’s liver story can be found here…
